With everyone stepping up to the plate, the title is open for all to be grabbed and it would be tough for the defending Champion with her nursing an injury.


Roland Garros – Women’s French Open 2009 Preview

On the 24th May to the 7th June, the 79th Roland-Garros Women Tennis will be held in Paris. Ana Ivanovic will be defending her title as she won this tournament back in 2008. In the last decade, Justine Henin dominated this event and with her recent retirement, others are stepping up to the plate to put their name in the Roland-Garros history book. The Roland-Garros is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the tennis calendar. Roland Garros is one of the four historic tennis tournaments which make up the legendary Grand Slam. The tournament’s reputation is well known for its world's premier clay court surface with a huge prize. The overall prize money for this tournament is set at Euros €5,590,800 and the winner will receive not just the money but also goes down in the history of winning a Grand Slam. This is the last of the clay courts before heading to the summer’s green grass. This year’s Roland-Garros is deeming to be very open to all contestants. There are many favorites for the title and it will be exciting to see who will last the longest in the clay courts.

The Clay Court
When the Roland-Garros tournament gets under way, it also means that the Clay season will be at an end after the tournament. The Clay courts have been favoring players that have the ability of the full western grip for more topspin. Clay courts are considered as a "slow" surface because the ball bounces relatively higher and slower. This makes it more difficult for a player to hit an unreturnable shot.

French Open for is very open
As you know, any players who are fit to enter the tournament will have their names put into the pot. This year’s French Open for the women’s is pretty much open for any of the top 10 players, to say that they are confident in winning the Roland-Garros. This court is for hard hitters so you’ll never know whether any low ranked players will be hitting hard on the day. Keep your minds open as there will be some surprises on the way.


Ana Ivanovic
World number 8 and the defending French Open champion returns to Paris with a huge expectation to win the tournament again. It has not been an ideal season so far and is currently nursing a knee injury, this French Open could have come a bit later rather than sooner. Prior to the knee injury, she entered the Internazionali BNL d'Italia where she crashed out in the third round. This could be a tough tournament for the reigning champion and Ana has a tendency to go all the way or crashing out in the 1st round of the French Open. Expect either a round one exit or a well fought tournament that will see Ivanovic returning to the scene of women’s tennis.

Dinara Safina
Currently the world number 1 in women's tennis world. She is the second Russian to reach that status since Maria Sharapova. On clay, Safina has entered three tournaments in preparation for French Open. She lost in the final of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart to Svetlana Kuznetsova and then at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, she revenged her lost at Stuttgart by beating Kuznetsova in the final. Safina was the first Russian to win the Internazionali BNL d'Italia tournament. Safina has advanced to the semifinals of the Madrid Masters which she is expected to reach the final. Safina looks in form and in best shape for the French Open. Last year she was a finalist and this year it is most likely we will go one better.

Serena Williams
World number 2 and plague with injuries running up to the French Open. She lost her world number one status to Dinara Safina when she withdrew from the Family Circle Cup in Charlestown. After that, Serena lost in the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome after her first match. In Madrid Open she retired after a right knee injury again in the first round. With the time off, Serena will have all her focus on the French Open while nursing her knee. She has won the French Open back in 2002 and she is expected to get pass the quarterfinals.

Venus Williams
World number three has done a bit better than her sister Serena on the clay courts this year. She entered the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome and got to the semifinals. Her semifinal appearance has moved her up one to third place in the world. Venus also entered into the Madrid Open where she passed the second round. There is a lot of expectation in Venus, she is really in form and is number one contender to Safina. Venus has never won the French Open but managed to get to the final in 2002. The French Open will either see the Williams rivalry continue or an America vs. Russia Davis Cup type of game.

Jelena Jankovic
World number 4 has not done too badly to the run up to the French Open on the clay courts. She entered into 4 clay tournaments and has not won any of them. She lost to Flavia Pennetta in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. The Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome saw Jankovic reached the quarterfinals but lost to Svetlana Kuznetsova. In the Madrid Open Jankovic will face again Flavia Pennetta in the quarterfinals. Historically, Jankovic has a good record at the French Open. She twice reached the French Open in the 2007 and 2008. She has never won this competition and this year could be her chance to win it despite the competition around her.

Elena Dementieva
The world number 5 Russian will be surging the attack to dominate the French Open with Safina. Although her previous records tell a story different story, she will make the latter stages of the competition. She has never won the French open and her best record came in 2002 where she was a finalist. Last year, she lost to Safina in the quarterfinals. As run up to the French Open she entered the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart and reached the semifinal. Dementieva did not enter the Internazionali BNL d'Italia. The Madrid Open was the ideal preparation for Dementieva as she got back to the courts but crashed out to Amelie Mauresmo in the third round. Expect Dementieva to reach the quarterfinals at least in the French Open.

Svetlana Kuznetsova
World number 7 and in her best form Svetlana could surprise a lot of people in the French Open. She entered the Porsche Tennis Prix and won the tournament beating Safina. The Internazionali BNL d'Italia saw a repeat of the Kuznetsova and Safina final, this time Kuznetsova lost in the final. The Madrid Masters was not an ideal preparation for the French Open as she crashed out in the second round. There is no doubt that Kuznetsova is in her best of form. She has beaten Safina before and the French Open will be an ideal place to prove that Kuznetsova is not just an outsider to the title. Her forehand and slices have improved immensely. If anyone is to spoil things for the Safina then Kuznetsova is your answer.

The French homegrown
Marion Bartoli, Alize Cornet and Amelie Mauresmo will be representing the French flags at the Roland-Garros. The emerging talent of Bartoli has given the French public a taste of what the future can hold. The aging Mauresmo is a nightmare for the top seeded players, if she gets into her stride then she is one of the best players in the world but if she is having a bad day, the tournament will end early for her. A lot of interest is on the French players in this year French Open and it would not be surprising to see one of them getting to the quarterfinals.

The Hopefuls
Nadia Petrova is a clay specialist but not having the best of the season. Danish Caroline Wozniacki has been impressive this year on tour but maybe the French Open will serve her as a tournament for gaining more experience. Flavia Pennetta is an upcoming tennis talent star but like Caroline, needs more experience in tournament games. Vera Zvonereva could be in contentions for a place in the quarterfinal but the clay courts could go against her.

Wild Cards
American Lauren Embree has received a wild card to the French Open.

The Final Verdict
It is very open this year. Safina is the obvious choice for many but Svetlana Kuznetsova can spoil that predication. The Williams sisters are outsiders for the title. They will be part of the line up to win the French Open and possibly meet each other on their way to the final. Defending champion Ivanovic is her own worst enemy and if she can get pass the first few rounds, then anything can happen. The French Open can be dominated by the Russians this year and the name that keeps popping up is Safina.

Top Five Contenders for the French Open

Whoever said it’s lonely at the top wasn’t talking about women’s tennis. At least not in its current state with the No. 1 ranking having been shared by three different players this year alone.

That’s why this list is so much fun to compile. It’s such a free-for-all at the top of the women's game that you can put just about anyone on here and get away with it. It’s not like the list of men’s contenders—put more than four names on there, and you’re asking for trouble, laughter, or both.

Once the French Open draw comes out on Friday, May 22, this list will need to be shortened, expanded or otherwise modified. But Friday is Friday, and today is well...not. So here it goes in order. Drum roll please…

1) Dinara Safina—She’s currently perched atop the women’s rankings, has won the last two big clay court tournaments (Rome and Madrid), and was a French Open finalist last year.

For these reasons—and the dramatically improved fitness and attitude that brought these about—it’s hard not to consider her the favorite. Unlike Rafael Nadal, who will shock the tennis world if he doesn’t win the men’s title, Safina won’t shock anyone by losing, but she certainly won’t surprise anyone by winning. 2) Svetlana Kuznetsova—Kuznetsova’s known to be hot or cold, and right now she’s hot.

At the clay court tournament in Stuttgart earlier this year, she was on fire, beating Safina in straight sets. The next week she made it to the Rome final also against Safina; that time she lost but not before beating much-touted Victoria Azarenka in the semifinal. Kuznetsova has won a Grand Slam before, so she knows and has what it takes. The big task for her will be to limit her unforced errors and, perhaps more importantly, keep it together mentally. 3) Elena Dementieva—Some consider her the best player never to have won a Grand Slam. She’s been close (she was finalist twice), and she won the Olympic gold medal for women’s singles last year.

She hasn’t been playing as well the past few months as she did before the Australian Open, when she won back-to-back tournaments, but she’s had respectable results in the three clay court tournaments she’s played. If she can play her high standard of tennis for two full weeks, keep her serve in check, and avoid meeting a Williams sister too early...she has a shot at winning her first Grand Slam. (2009 Singles Record: 31-8)

4) Venus Williams—She’s never won the French Open before, and everyone know she’s not nearly as good on clay as she is on grass. You can’t count her out though, because she’s a seven-time Grand Slam champion, she’s been playing consistently well and mostly injury-free this year (she’s back at No. 3 in the world) and, perhaps most importantly, she’s a Williams sister.

She’s played three clay court tournaments, losing to eventual champion Sabine Lisicki in Charleston and eventual finalist Safina in Rome (in what some consider the women’s match of the year). If she can play her forceful style of tennis while limiting her unforced errors and increasing her first-serve percentage—and not get dismissed in the first two or three rounds (like she was last year )—she may finally be able to add the French Open trophy to her overflowing cabinet. 5) Serena Williams—She's on a shocking four-match losing streak, including all three clay court matches she's played this year, and she may have a leg injury. However, she's also been in the finals of the last three Grand Slams (winning two of them), has won 10 Grand Slams (including the French Open), and is currently No. 2 in the world. Those don't even include the biggest reason she's a contender.

The biggest reason? She’s Serena Williams. You can't always count her in, but you can't ever count her out. (2009 Singles Record: 21-6)

Passing shots: Five storylines to watch at French Open, more

With the French Open kicking off the season's most important six-week stretch Sunday, here's a look at five of the meatiest plotlines at Roland Garros:

1. Can Ana Ivanovic mount a serious title defense?

It's been a dicey 52 weeks since Ivanovic reached the summit of the WTA rankings with her victory in last year's French Open.

The 21-year-old Serb injured her thumb shortly after her Paris victory, lost in the third round at Wimbledon and ceded the No. 1 ranking after 12 weeks on top. She failed to win back-to-back matches in her next five events, including the U.S. Open.

Shortly after her third-round defeat at this year's Australian Open, her ranking dropped to No. 8. Following an ignominious exit at last month's Italian Open -- she squandered a 4-0 lead in the third set in a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 loss to Agnieszka Radwanska -- Ivanovic withdrew from last week's Madrid event to ensure her health for Roland Garros.

A strong performance in Paris could subvert the One-Slam Wonder murmurs. But will her fitness comply?

2. Can anybody beat Rafael Nadal in Paris?

The knee-jerk response is yes. Didn't Roger Federer just demonstrate his clay-court mettle in Nadal's backyard and announce his candidacy for the French, the lone Grand Slam missing from his otherwise impeccable résumé?

Not so fast.

Nadal's next loss at Roland Garros will be his first. The four-time French Open champion is 28-0 dating to his 2005 debut, when he derailed Federer's bid for a career Slam in the semis and became the first teenager to win a Major since Pete Sampras at the 1990 U.S. Open.

There's also the issue of the surface on which Federer beat Nadal last weekend: Many players including Nadal claimed the clay at La Caja Mágica played more like a hard court, due in part to the altitude of the venue.

One could also argue Federer might not have beaten Nadal if Novak Djokovic hadn't first tenderized the Spaniard in the previous day's epic four-hour semifinal clash -- an early candidate for Match of the Year -- where Nadal saved three match points before advancing in an extended third-set tiebreak.

It would be unfair to stamp an asterisk on Federer's victory -- and there's certainly no overstating the psychological benefits of shaking his eight-month title drought before the French. But if there's anybody Nadal is hoping to see on the opposite side of the draw, it's Djokovic.

3. Can Dinara Safina silence the doubters once and for all?

When the 22-year-old Russian inherited the No. 1 ranking from Serena Williams earlier this month, it was hardly a peaceful transfer of power. "We all know who the real No. 1 is," Williams told reporters just days after.

Safina, to her credit, took the high road and let her performance do the talking.

Until Friday.

"I guess they're jealous that I'm so young and No. 1," Safina reasoned in Madrid after dispensing of Patty Schnyder in the semifinals, one day before whipping Danish teenager Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets for the title.

"To become No. 1 it's not just winning the Grand Slams, it's how you compete the whole year," Safina explained. And she's right. The younger sister of two-time major champion Marat Safin, who's reached the finals in 12 of her past 20 events, has earned the ranking on the merit of her week-to-week consistency.

While Serena has suffered a pair of puzzling opening-round exits since her swipe, the real No. 1 -- no quotation marks necessary -- has won 10 straight matches and plowed to a pair of singles titles in Rome and Madrid.

Her comments Friday aside, Safina has handled the pressure of justifying her No. 1 ranking with poise. But earning her Grand Slam stripes with a victory at Roland Garros -- where she made her breakthrough in 2008 with a run to the final -- would alleviate the burden of proof she's borne.

4. How will Maria Sharapova's shoulder hold up?

It's been a long way down for Sharapova, whose ranking has plummeted to No. 135 during her nine-month absence from the tour for shoulder surgery.

The 22-year-old Russian played her first singles match since August at the Warsaw Open on Monday, earning a hard-fought victory over Italy's Tathiana Garbin in the first round. The rust showed. Playing with a criss-crossed bandage on her right shoulder, Sharapova required nine match points to finish her 68th-ranked opponent.

Sharapova has always weathered her share of criticism. But the three-time major champion has spent 17 weeks atop the WTA rankings -- six more than Venus Williams -- and could become the 10th woman to achieve a career Grand Slam with a victory at Roland Garros.

Without a dominant No. 1 player on the women's side -- five different players held the top ranking in 2008 -- can Sharapova capitalize on the opportunity and make a deep run in Paris?

5. Can any American man survive until the second week?

Of the three Americans in the ATP Top 50 -- Andy Roddick, James Blake and Mardy Fish -- none has advanced to the Round of 16 at Roland Garros.

It's been a decade since Andre Agassi lifted the Coupe des Mousquetaires and 18 years since Jim Courier's back-to-back Paris triumphs. But Americans have come up empty in the years since.

Can this season's event be any different? It's hard to say.

The point-prolonging clay of Roland Garros neutralizes the sort of aggressive, attacking approach typically favored by players from the U.S. But Americans have shown signs of life during this clay-court season, with Roddick offering Federer a spirited three-set challenge in the Madrid quarters and Blake pushing Albert Montanes to the limit in the Estoril Open final -- squandering a pair of match points in a three-set defeat.

It's been six years since Roddick's U.S. Open triumph, America's last Grand Slam men's singles victory. The smart money says the drought extends to 22 in Paris.

Raising the roof

While Federer and Nadal toiled in Madrid, Wimbledon showcased its new retractable roof on Centre Court with an entertaining slate of exhibition matches.

Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf, the married couple with eight Wimbledon singles titles between them, played a good-natured mixed doubles exhibition with Tim Henman and Kim Clijsters before the men and women paired off in best-of-one singles matches.

Over 15,000 spectators -- including former and current stars like Boris Becker and Andy Murray -- peered upwards as the 10 trusses supporting the translucent roof covered the court.

It didn't take long for the expensive renovation to get justification: Rain started falling over the All England Club shortly after the the roof closed for the start of the doubles match, which Henman and Clijsters won 7-6 (6). Agassi earned a 6-4 win over Henman in the men's singles match, with Graf later clipping Clijsters by the same score.

For Pete's sake

Agassi and Graf aren't the only former superstars climbing back into the saddle. Pete Sampras is taking part in the "Millennium Challenge" on July 27.

Sampras, whose record of 14 major titles is under threat from Federer, is scheduled to face Marat Safin in a rematch of the 2000 U.S. Open final on opening night of the 83rd annual L.A. Tennis Open.

Safin won the first of his two Grand Slam crowns against Sampras at Flushing Meadows in '00 and holds a 4-3 edge in their all-time series.

10 Questions Heading Up to the French Open

For every 100 previews of the French Open, 99 of them will tell you that Rafael Nadal will easily hoist his fifth consecutive Coupe des Mousquetaires. And the lonely other one is probably written by either the BBC or a hopeless Federer fanatic.

Needless to say, the men's side of the draw, has essentially been determined. Now, the mere formality of playing through the tournament.

However, the WTA is anything but decided. Since the sudden retirement of then-No. 1 Justine Henin, clay court titles have been completely up for grabs. No one has come close to establishing dominance on the surface for an extended duration.

For the champions of 2008, the singles and doubles platforms may have been unexpected, shall we say? Ana Ivanovic captured her first-ever Slam title, coincidentally bumping her into the world No. 1 slot. Spanish duo Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual swiped the title out of the hands of Black & Huber.

Through the fog, nothing seems clear. Here are some of the big questions.


10. Can the Ukraine's sister act climb the final slope to a French Open title?

Alona and Kateryna Bondarenko smashed their way onto the doubles scene at last year's Roland Garros, running all the way to the semifinals before they were eliminated. The pair believe they can finally go all the way in 2009.

Their performance in 2008 got better with each round. If they can climb the peak, they would become the first-ever sister pairing to capture the crown.


9. Can doubles duo Liezel Huber and Cara Black complete the elusive career Grand Slam?

Liezel Huber and Cara Black have won all three Slams to date, except the French. The current world No. 1 pairing have reached the final before, back in 2005, but fell to the 2008 champions Medina Garrigues and Ruano Pascual.

They are hitting their stride to perfection at the right time, too. As the top seed in Madrid, they knocked out Nos. 5, 4 and 3 en route to a championship. Watch out. Their Grand Slam could be the story of the tournament that nobody talks about.


8. Who will be the Carla Suarez Navarro surprise player of 2009?

Last year, the Spanish qualifier ran to the quarterfinals, knocking off a pair of seeded players before reaching the elite eight. Despite losing to third-seeded Jelena Jankovic in straight sets, she made headlines all over the tennis world.

This year's qualifying rounds are loaded with capable assassins.
Yaroslava Shvedova: The towering top-seeded Kazakh is a solid fundamental clay court player who could surprise with her speed and power. She gave Italian Flavia Pennetta a run for her money in Madrid.
Simona Halep: Romania's 2008 Junior French Open champion is ready to make a splash on the big stage. The 17-year-old has already dumped her fair share of decent adversaries on clay.
Arantxa Rus: It may be the Dutchwoman's first appearance in the French Open, but don't be discouraged. The southpaw from Monster can hold serve with anybody. She's had a good deal of success on the Junior stage on clay.

Or maybe it will be someone else completely?


7. Will there be any top seeds making early exits?

In 2008, three of the top four players in the draw made it to the semifinals. Maria Sharapova, the No. 1 seed, did not. She was joined by the Williams' sisters, who both made third round exits, and sixth seed Anna Chakvetadze, who dropped out in the second.

This year, many of the same faces make up the top ten players in the draw. Newcomers to the group however, will be Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka and Vera Zvonareva.

Who will fall out early, if anyone? Or will the WTA emulate the ATP, and have all the top seeds playing in week two?


6. Will Maria Sharapova be a factor?

Well, she's back. And gunning for the career Grand Slam. But will she be any kind of factor at all? Currently ranked at 126th in the world, she sure won't have an easy road to the finals. But forget that.

Getting out of the first few rounds will be a challenge. She is streaking through the field at Warsaw, set to face Alona Bondarenko in the third round.

The last time she faced a top-caliber player was last year in a R16 defeat at the hands of countrywoman Dinara Safina. That's not a friendly layoff.


5. Will Serena Williams back up her "I'm the best player in the world" attitude?

For whatever pressure is on Dinara Safina to produce a Slam victory now, Serena also shoulders a great deal of it. Her bold statements may not have been delivered at the best time. Since winning the trophy in 2002, Serena has not had a sniff of French Open singles success.

Her health has also been a primary concern. Every tournament she chooses to play nowadays, she finds herself with some severely dampening injury. She will not win at Roland Garros without total strength.


4. How far will the young guns go?

They are armed. They are ready. They are the Young Guns of the WTA, namely Azarenka, Wozniacki and Agnieszka Radwanska. None have won a Slam title yet, but will that change this year? Azarenka has already proved her worth, capturing the crown in Miami, and while her success has not transferred to clay just yet, she can heat up at any time.

Caroline has a new-found love for the dirt, after winning her first clay court title of her career at Ponte Vedra Beach. She also reached two finals, none more bigger than Madrid, where she gave everything she had in a loss to top-seeded Safina.

Is it their time to shine?


3. Which Ivanovic will show up?

When Ana Ivanovic has been good, she's been very good. See: Indian Wells. When Ana Ivanovic has been bad, she's been, well, pretty awful. Agnieszka Radwanska ended her fun in Rome.

Since reaching the world No. 1 spot after winning last year's French Open, will she have the consistency to defend her title? Common sense says no.

Good or bad?


2. Can Dinara Safina silence her critics and win her maiden Slam title?

Is she really worth No. 1? Or is she just a place-holder until someone else will step up? Either way, the spot is hers for now. She has heard all the criticism out there. Since assuming the top spot from Serena, she's been told by everyone in town that she has yet to win a Slam title.

However, hearing these critics and believing them are two different things. She's been heating up at just the right time. On clay, she has reached three straight finals, and won two of them: Madrid and Rome.

But can she win the big one? If she can't get motivated here, there isn't much that will. Since Justine Henin retired, not many top seeds have had success on clay. Safina will do anything it takes to end that madness.

There has been a lot of debate lately about who is really the #1 player in the world. Serena said there is no doubt that she is, and Dinara commented right back saying that she is #1 for a reason. The edge has to go to Safina who has won back-to-back clay-court tournaments in Rome and Madrid leading up to the French Open. This is where she made her big breakthrough last year, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see her holding the trophy at the end of the tournament!

Since reaching the finals in Miami, Serena has really struggled losing three straight matches. She hasn’t won on clay thus far in 2009 and had to pull out of her last match because of an injury. Still, if I was a betting man I would count on Serena being there at the end. If she’s healthy I see a deep run, if not then it could be another early exit.

At the beginning of the year, no one was playing better tennis than Dementieva. She won her first 15 matches before falling to Carla Suarez Navarro in the quarters down under. Her results on clay this year include semifinal appearances in Charleston and Stuttgart, and she is a former finalist at the French. No longer is her serve as attackable as is used to be and when you add this to her game she becomes a serious threat for the title.

Jankovic started out slow in 2009, but seems to be finding her game now. She won the title on clay in Marbella and has been to the quarters in Stuttgart, Rome, and Madrid. Against the top players, she is still struggling, but Jankovic has the ability and determination to turn it on and get herself pumped up for the big matches. She wants to get back on top of the rankings and there is no better place to make a splash then at a Grand Slam!

P.S. Her speed and agility must come back. She doesn’t cover the court as well as she has in the past.

Zvonareva hasn’t played since Charleston because of an injury, but she is still planning on playing the French. She is a very good clay-courter and has already won two titles this year prior to the injury. Her movement is second to none, her groundstrokes are flawless, and she has a solid serve. All of this makes her a very dangerous player.

Like Azarenka she hasn’t been out of the fourth round of any Grand Slam, but she has the talent to change that right now!

She then reached the quarterfinals in Estoril before pulling out with a minor injury. She is healthy and ready to roll and we are hoping for a strong showing from this young German.

If she is feeling good and can quickly regain her confidence then watch out for Ms. Sharapova!

2009 French Open – Draw Breakdown

Women’s Draw

I’ve been saying this all week: The women’s field is wide open. The favorite has to be Safina with the way she has been playing recently, but there are certainly no guarantees in women’s tennis. Speaking of Safina, she opens with a tough opponent in Anne Keothavong. Assuming she gets past that, she could face a couple of Russians en route to the quarters – Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the third round and Alisa Kleybanova in the fourth round. Both are good young players who would present interesting matches for Safina. Waiting for Safina in the quarters could be Victoria Azarenka, Ana Ivanovic, or Carla Suarez Navarro. Azarenka has been one of the most consistent women on tour this year, but is 1-3 against Safina in her career. Ivanovic is who Safina lost to in the finals last year, but she hasn’t played well in 2009. Navarro was the surprise of 2008 at Roland Garros and she reached the quarters in Australia as well. That would be a fun match to watch.

In the bottom quarter of the top half of the women’s draw the top-seed is Venus Williams. She will get a familiar opponent in the opening round in American Bethanie Mattek. The second round could present a challenge for Venus as she would face either Lucie Safarova or Sabine Lisicki. If you remember, Lisicki, an NBTA student, beat Venus en route to the title in Charleston last month. Venus could also face a couple of Russian women who are coming back from injury in Maria Sharapova or Vera Zvonareva. Sharapova played in Poland this week (after a very, very long layoff) and Zvonareva hasn’t played since Charleston. Both have the stuff needed to beat Venus on clay. If the seeds hold, a Venus/Safina semi would make for good television!

On the bottom half of the draw Serena Williams is the clear favorite (if she is healthy). Her first round opponent is Klara Zakopalova who actually just beat Serena in Marbella on clay a couple of weeks ago. Her second round opponent could be tricky as well, as she could face veteran Virginia Ruano Pascual or Nicole Vaidisova. Serena is looking at another potential tough match in the fourth round against Flavia Pennetta. If Serena’s knee holds up and she gets to the quarters she is looking at Kuznetsova, Schnyder or Radwanska – all would be tough for her.

In the top quarters of the bottom half of the women’s draw, Elena Dementieva, Jelena Jankovic, and Caroline Wozniacki are the top seeds. It wouldn’t surprise me to see any of those girls in the quarterfinals, but I think Dementieva probably has the best chance because of her history here. Look out for Medina Garrigues and Alize Cornet as well as both players are solid on clay.

It’s going to be a wild two weeks for the ladies, and I can’t wait for it to begin!

- Евгений, в 1999 году вы, как и Динара Сафина сейчас, начинали Roland Garros в ранге первой ракетки мира. Помните ли свои ощущения 10-летней давности? Какое-то дополнительное психологическое давление чувствовали?

- Честно говоря, да. Поскольку, защищая звание первой ракетки, ты как бы попадаешь в положение обороняющегося. И я не сомневаюсь, что Динара наверняка испытывает серьезное давление, с которым - надо отдать ей должное - прекрасно справляется. Три недавних турнира в Штутгарте, Риме и Мадриде она провела просто отлично, доказав, что абсолютно не случайно возглавила рейтинг.

- Согласны с тем, что выход на первое место психологически раскрепостил Сафину и позволил ей раскрыться?

- Мне трудно об этом судить. Но ясно, что в нынешней ситуации Динара будет ставить перед собой уже новые задачи. И судя по результатам последних недель, она действительно чувствует сейчас себя гораздо более комфортно, чем пару месяцев назад, когда каждая победа давалась ей с большущим трудом.

- Придерживаетесь ли вы распространенного мнения, согласно которому Сафина - главный фаворит Roland Garros?

- Динара, конечно, сейчас выделяется по уровню игры, и ее шансы на победу в Париже действительно велики. Но она все-таки не столь безоговорочный фаворит, как Рафаэль Надаль у мужчин.

- Серена Уильямс недавно заявила, что вне зависимости от ситуации в рейтинге всегда считает первой в мире только себя. Как вы относитесь к такой постановке вопроса? Может, выступая публично с подобными заявлениями, американка сама себя в чем-то хочет убедить?

- Мне все-таки они кажутся достаточно аргументированными. Возьмите, к примеру, гольф, где давно доминирует Тайгер Вудс. Если бы американец потерял первое место в рейтинге, что, кстати, могло произойти сравнительно недавно, подавляющее большинство болельщиков все равно продолжало бы считать его лучшим. Похожая ситуация и с Сереной, на счету которой немало побед на турнирах "Большого шлема". Правда, я не думаю, что сейчас, перед Открытым чемпионатом Франции, она может высказаться в том же духе. Все-таки, повторяю, Динара блестяще доказывает неслучайность своего пребывания на вершине.

- Перейдем к мужчинам. Недавнее поражение Надаля от Роджера Федерера в финале супертурнира в Мадриде с точки зрения расклада сил перед Roland Garros о чем-то говорит?

- Абсолютно нет. Два года назад в то же самое время Рафа уступил Роджеру в Гамбурге, а затем победил его в Париже. И потом в этот раз Надаль выглядел очень уставшим после упорнейшего полуфинала против Новака Джоковича. Он "подсел" физически, внимание было не то. Но я не думаю, что это поражение отрицательно скажется на уверенности Надаля. Он по-прежнему - ярко выраженный фаворит, и если в полуфинале встретится даже с третьим "сеяным" Энди Маррэем, то, уверен, легко его пройдет.

- А Федереру, который в этом году много натерпелся как от Надаля, так и от других соперников, такой успех добавит уверенности?

- Вот для Федерера результат того финала действительно важен. Хотя Роджер уже не выглядит таким непобедимым, как раньше, тем более на грунте. И любой соперник, выходя на матч против него, понимает, что имеет шанс.

- Кто кроме Федерера может составить конкуренцию Надалю?

- Джокович. Для него попасть в одну половину сетки с Федерером - идеальный вариант. Правда, на горизонте у серба есть не самые простые соперники - в частности, Хуан Карлос Ферреро, побеждавший на Roland Garros в 2003 году. Но если Джокович ставит перед собой самые высокие цели, то просто обязан побеждать таких игроков.

- Известно, что Джокович на днях посетил Монако, где в выходные состоится этап чемпионата мира "Формулы-1", и пообщался там с некоторыми гонщиками. Такая поездка не выглядит легкомысленной в преддверии Открытого чемпионата Франции?

- Не возьмусь судить Джоковича, который, видимо, руководствовался собственными соображениями. Но на его месте я бы так не поступил.

- Какими вам видятся парижские перспективы наших соотечественников? Наверное, непросто им придется?

- Думаю, да. В последние годы лучше всех на Roland Garros выступал Николай Давыденко, но мне трудно оценивать его нынешнюю форму. В Мадриде он отказался от матча с Роддиком из-за травмы, а в Китцбюэле вообще сыграть не смог. И если, не получив достаточно игровой практики, Николай пройдет сейчас хотя бы несколько кругов, то это будет неплохой результат.

Может быть, лучше не играть пару, а уезжать сразу после первого круга и тренироваться, настраиваться на одиночку.

- Вы поменяли бы успехи в парном выступлении на победы в одиночке?

- Вас приглашали в сборную России как парного игрока?

- Да, меня приглашали в прошлом году играть в финале (против сборной Испании), но я отказалась. Если честно, сейчас я не жажду играть за сборную. Хочу сконцентрироваться на своей карьере, на своей игре, так как она неважно складывается. А играть пары, быть четвертым номером, сидеть на лавочке и болеть - этого я не хочу.

- А вообще вы планируете в будущем играть за сборную или вам это неинтересно?

- На данный момент мне это вообще неинтересно.

- Как вы думаете, на сколько процентов от своих возможностей вы сейчас играете?

- Если наберется 50… Хотя думаю, что меньше, чем на 50 процентов я сейчас играю. В данный момент я переживаю спад. Начало года вообще смазанным получилось, но зато есть к чему стремиться (улыбается).

)—Serena Williams was sure the ball went off her opponent’s arm, a no-no in tennis. The opponent, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, insisted the ball went off her racket.

Williams accused Martinez Sanchez of “cheating.” Martinez Sanchez thought that was a “stupid” thing for Williams to say.

Then consider that the point in question helped Martinez Sanchez win the first set of their French Open match Saturday. Oh, and that Williams had a coughing fit during a third-set changeover. All in all, what eventually became a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory for Williams stands as the latest example of the athlete/actress’ penchant for theatrics.

“I’m, like, drama. And I don’t want to be drama,” a hoarse Williams said, straining to get the words out. “I’m like one of those girls on a reality show that has all the drama, and everyone in the house hates them because no matter what they do, like, drama follows them. I don’t want to be that girl.”

Perhaps. But the 2002 French Open champion, who dabbles in acting, sure seems to find herself in the middle of unique on-court situations.


Even Williams made passing reference Saturday to two episodes by naming the opponents, if not mentioning the details: a 2003 French Open semifinal loss marked by Justine Henin’s gamesmanship and Williams’ postmatch tears, and a 2004 U.S. Open quarterfinal loss to Jennifer Capriati that contained enough questionable officiating to prompt the introduction of replay reviews in the sport.

Here’s what happened in Saturday’s third-round match:

At 2-2 in the first set, Williams double-faulted to give a break point to Martinez Sanchez, a Spaniard who is ranked 43rd and never has reached the fourth round at a major. On the next point, Martinez Sanchez raced to the net behind a drop shot that brought Williams forward, too. Williams ran up and smacked a backhand right at Martinez Sanchez.

In what seemed to be an effort to protect herself, as much as to try to hit a volley, the left-handed Martinez Sanchez raised her racket, quick as could be. The ball ricocheted back—off her racket? off her arm? off both?—and past Williams. The point was awarded to Martinez Sanchez, giving her the game.

NBC, which televised the match, showed The Associated Press replays in which the ball appears to glance first off Martinez Sanchez’s right forearm, then off her racket, before going over the net. Tennis rules say if a ball touches a player, the point is lost.

As the women headed to the ensuing changeover, Williams tried to say something to Martinez Sanchez, who kept walking. Then Williams spoke to the chair umpire, Emmanuel Joseph, saying, “I felt so bad. I didn’t mean to hit her.”

Repeatedly pointing to her own forearm, Williams told Joseph, “I don’t know why you gave her the game. That’s totally not cool.”

“She better not come to the net again,” Williams said.

At her postmatch news conference, Williams was asked whether she thought the ball touched Martinez Sanchez.

“I didn’t ‘think’ the ball touched her—the ball did touch her, 100 percent, on her arm. The rules of tennis is when the ball hits your body, then it’s out of play. You lose a point automatically,” Williams said. “So the ball hit her body, and therefore, she should have lost the point—instead of cheating.”

A moment later, rolling her eyes, Williams added: “It was like, ‘No way.’ I would never do that. I’ve never done that. I’ve never sunk low.”

When Williams’ comments were relayed, Martinez Sanchez said: “I don’t like to comment about this. It’s a stupid comment.”

Asked in both English and Spanish whether the ball hit her, she repeatedly said it went off her racket.

As for Williams’ health, the 10-time Grand Slam singles champion said she’s been fighting a cold.

“I thought,” Williams said, “I was going to cough up a lung or something.”

Talk about drama.

Over the past four rounds in Paris, Safina has more than lived up to her billing as the top seed. She has demolished her opponents and dropped just five games in four matches. Speaking on Sunday, Safina hinted that she would like to be challenged further on court. “Honestly, I still feel I can do much better,” Safina said. “If somebody would push me more I still can get much more out of myself.”

She’ll likely get her wish on Tuesday against Victoria Azarenka. Since the end of the last major, Azarenka has stepped up her game and made her presence felt on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. She clobbered Serena Williams at her home tournament in Miami to win the Sony Ericsson Open, and most recently French Open defending champion Ana Ivanovic felt her wrath with a fourth round, straight sets knockout.

While an upset is never out of the question, especially when it concerns Azarenka, Safina is favored to keep riding her wave of momentum into the semifinals. Azarenka’s playing solid, but not perfect tennis, and judging from the way Safina looks, she’ll need to bring her “A” game to the court just to steal away a set.

(2) Serena Williams vs. (7) Svetlana Kuznetsova
Truth be told, Svetlana Kuznetsova is a better player on clay than Serena Williams. Svetlana doesn’t have a Coupe Suzanne Lenglen trophy sitting on her mantle at home, but over the last few seasons, she has developed into a world-class clay court player.

Unfortunately for Svetlana, she’s had the bad luck of running into the eventual champion or runner-up each year since 2004. She lost to Anastasia Myskina (champion) in the fourth round of 2004, Henin (champion) in the semifinals of 2005, Henin again in the final of 2006, Ana Ivanovic (finalist) during the quarterfinals of 2007, and last season, Kuznetsova was downed by her countrywoman and eventual runner-up Dinara Safina in the semifinals. In other words, it takes a very good player to beat Svetlana on clay in Paris.

Fans have been looking forward to seeing a Dinara vs. Serena final showdown ever since Serena declared herself the de facto world number one. Ironically, even if Serena were to defeat Dinara in the championship match, she still won’t have enough points to overtake Safina on the rankings, leaving the whole situation up for discussion. But that’s still three rounds away.

Kuznetsova has played under the radar this year at Roland Garros and quietly racked up four solid wins. Agnieszka Radwanska pushed Sveta into three sets in the fourth round, but Kuznetsova quickly shut things down 6-1 in the decider. Look for her to give Serena Williams a big scare, but I still favor Serena’s chances of keeping her Grand Slam pursuit alive.

Ten days ago if you had told me that Maria Sharapova would be competing for a berth in the semifinals of the French Open, I would have said you were nuts.

But here we are, and Mademoiselle Maria has remained alive to shriek her way into the second week. Her quarterfinal appearance did not come easily as Sharapova has been forced to spend nearly nine hours on court thanks to twelve sets of play. She and Cibulkova have played twice in the past with Sharapova’s power helping her get past the petite 5″3 Slovakian. However, both those matches on clay were close, so Sharapova could be headed for another tough day at the office.

(30) Samantha Stosur vs. Sorana Cirstea
Romanian fans have much to cheer about as for the first time in over a decade a Romanian woman has reached the quarterfinals of a major. It has also been a big week for Australia as an Aussie woman is into the final eight at Roland Garros for the first time since 1988. Pity that these two history-makers have to face each other in the quarterfinals.

Sorana Mihaela Cirstea has almost come out of nowhere to reach the Roland Garros quarterfinals. The nineteen year-old Romanian has only won nine matches all year, including four so far in Paris. She has only been on the Tour for two years, but in that time, she’s amassed her first title in Tashkent (2008) and beaten a handful of big names including Patty Schnyder, Anna Chakvetadze, Daniela Hantuchova and most recently, Jelena Jankovic.

The question in my mind is whether she can deal with the pressure of playing for a berth in the semifinals. The Grand Slam spotlight in Paris is a long way removed from Tashkent, Uzbekistan, but to her credit, Cirstea did not wither under the pressure of facing Jankovic, one of the Tour’s grittiest players. Still, she needs to expect a tough fight against the crafty and experienced Samantha Stosur, who has waited a long time to reach her first major semifinal in singles.

Так что статья не выражает то что я думаю.
Но всегда лучше знать что другие думают.
Мне кажется часто русские люди не знают что на западе думают и поэтому появляются недоразумения.

Ну вообще то в век интернета , умеющиее читать, слушать и видеть люди знают ( а в России они вроде есть).

а мне кажется, хорошо, что denny статью привел. нужно же разные точки зрения знать. именно нужно, потому что, судя даже и по форуму, несмотря на всеобщее среднее (сколько уж ему десятилей?), интернет и более или менее открытые границы реальность не все себе представляют.
и, кстати, это совершенно не обязательно, менять свое отношение к происходящему. мы думаем так, кто-то иначе, и в данном случае деньги платят они. это сведения, а они лишними не бывают.

Я разве сказала, что плохо. Просто меня удивляет, "такое" отношение к нашему теннису. Вот и все. Если уж на то пошло, хотелось бы услышать обоснование, такого отношения.

Перец ругательств Сафиной и «макароны» от Кузнецовой

Вчера на открытом чемпионате Франции по теннису кухня была русской. В обоих женских полуфиналах блюда для зрителей готовили россиянки. На первое – солянка с перчиком от Сафиной с приправой от словачки Доминики Цибулковой. В дебюте первой партии обе теннисные кухарки с любопытством заглянули в поваренные книги друг друга. Сафина быстро поняла, что ее «гросбух» посолиднее будет. И вскоре она состряпала то, от чего маленькая (всего 161 сантиметр роста) словачка поперхнулась. 6:3 в пользу Сафиной.

Во второй партии девочка-пружинка без остановке кружилась по кухне, мешая Динаре сосредоточиться. Время шло, а солянка не закипала. Тогда вскипела сама Сафина, и присыпала кухню перцем ругательств. Сначала – по-английски. Не помогло. Затем по-русски. Вот это - в самый раз! И дело пошло! При счете 3:2, проигрывая 15:40, Сафина все же взяла свою подачу. После этого словацкая пружинка показала, что она все-таки не железная, и сломалась. Вновь 6:3 в пользу россиянки. И Сафина второй год подряд выходит в финал «Ролан Гаррос».

Ну, а на другой кухне Светлана Кузнецова и австралийка Саманта Стосур сначала решили приготовить что-то простенькое – похожее на макароны по-флотски. В первом сете Кузнецова спокойно и, как говорится, на медленном огне отварила австралийские макароны - 6:4. А во втором сете россиянка так же спокойно вывалила в кастрюлю тушенку и, позевывая, принялась помешивать – 3:1, 4:2... Но тут Стосур подскочила к поварихе, отобрала у нее поварешку инициативы и добавила в блюдо специй интриги. Кузнецова и оглянуться не успела, как уже оказалась в неловком положении – 4:5. И все, что ей удалось сделать, так это выровнять то самое неловкое положение (6:6) и довести дело до тай-брейка. В нем она вела 5:2, но все-таки проиграла 5:7.

Перед решающим третьим сетом Кузнецова даже сменила свою темную майку на такую же светлую, как у Стосур. И ведь помогло! Когда время матча перевалило за второй час, менее опытная австралийка все-таки не выдержала и поплыла, по-флотски... В итоге – 6:3 в пользу «макарон» Кузнецовой. Таким образом - держись Франция – грядет русский финал. Сафина против Кузнецовой! Эта битва состоится в Париже в субботу.

97-е Открытое первенство Франции по теннису подходит к концу. Осталось сыграть два главных матча. Сначала субботний матч Кузнецовой и Сафиной станет третьим российским финалом на турнирах "Большого шлема". 5 лет назад на "Ролан Гаррос" Анастасия Мыскина играла в финале с Еленой Дементьевой. А теперь их нелегкий путь предстоит повторить Светлане и Динаре. Женский финал 2004 года не удался и зрелищным не получился. Тогда на помощь пришли аргентинцы, разыгравшие драму в пяти сетах. Нынче у мужчин в финале великолепный Роджер Федерер и швед Робин Сёдерлинг, занявший место грунтового короля Рафаэля Надаля.

За всю историю тенниса россиянки выиграли 100 титулов WTA, поэтому победительница матча выиграет 101-й российский титул. Кто же это будет? Как говорил частенько Пит Сампрас, рекорд которого в 14 титулов «Большого шлема» может повторить Федерер, «имена вторых не помнит никто». Это прекрасно понимают и Динара, и Светлана. И ошибаются те, кто считают, что титул нужнее сейчас Динаре, потому что она первая ракетка без шлема, и те, кто считает победу нужнее для Светланы, потому что она после успеха на US Open в 2004 году долгое время ходила в «подружках невесты» - выходила в финалы крупных турниров, но проигрывала. Одинаково сильно выиграть в Париже хотят обе.

После блестящей игры Федерера во второй половине полуфинала с дель Потро вспомнились слова Динары, когда её спросили, считает ли она, что мужской теннис лучше или сильнее, более продвинутый, чем женский, или нет? Динара ответила: «Ну, это совершенно разные вещи – мужской и женский теннис. Это то же самое, как мужской футбол и женский футбол. Это абсолютно разные виды спорта. Но только в женском теннисе вы сможете увидеть всё по полной программе. Здесь и драмы, и крики, и смех. В мужском теннисе это тоже присутствует, но намного меньше. Но думаю, что главная разница заключается в том, что мужчины сильнее женщин психологически».

Именно на это и хотелось бы обратить внимание, хотя различные цифры для сведения привести можно. 9 лет назад на Мальорке девушки встретились впервые. Света перед финалом вспоминала об этом так: «Мне было 12 или 13, и Динара была невероятной девушкой. Она была на год меня моложе. Но у меня не было никаких шансов в матче против неё. Я помню, что проиграла ей 1:6, 0:6 или что-то типа этого, без вариантов.

Я была тогда девушкой из Санкт-Петербурга, а она была из Москвы, её мама была известным тренером, у которой она и тренировалась. Я хочу сказать, что она была № 1, № 2 в своём возрасте и всегда играла здорово. А я даже не помню, какой номер рейтинга был тогда у меня.

Но потом я разговаривала с ней. Я спросила: Динара, ты помнишь что-нибудь? Она говорит: да, я помню тебя в майке рок-группы, потому что я была большой поклонницей одной рок-группы и пришла на матч с большой бутылкой "Кока-колы".

Это, конечно, было весело. Она рассказала мне всё это, как она это помнит. Она была тогда очень хорошенькой, а её брат был огромен. Я тогда подошла к Марату и сказала: "Эй, я знаю твою сестру Динару. Можешь дать мне автограф"? Знаете, это было смешно».

Всего в 13 матчах 8 побед одержала Сафина, но в этом году они сыграли дважды. Света сказала журналистам: «Ну да ладно, счёт 1:1. У нас на грунте ничья, верно? Я стараюсь думать об этом именно таким образом. Думаю, что это будет новый матч. Будет абсолютно другой день. Неважно, даже если ты выиграла до этого 15 раз подряд или она выиграла 15 раз прежде. Это будет совсем новый день. И всё может сложиться иначе».

В Париже девушки проделали к финалу разный и по своему сложный путь. Кузнецова дала больше повода для беспокойства в матчах с Сереной Уильямс и Самантой Стосур, как под копирку, дрогнув без видимых причин в концовках вторых сетов. Сафина показала более стабильную игру, но ошеломительный первый сет против Азаренко и неуверенный старт с Цибулковой не позволяют назвать её игру безупречной.

Динара уступает Свете в скорости передвижения, атлетизме и мощи отдельных ударов, но это компенсируется более надёжной и стабильной игрой. Можно сказать, что свои козыри в личных встречах на грунте девушки уже показали: Светлана в Штутгарте, а Динара в Риме. Но думается, что в Париже получится какой-то третий сценарий.
Обе отлично знают сильные и слабые стороны, как свои, так и соперницы, но насколько план на игру удастся реализовать, определит только психологическое состояние финалисток. Кто первый успокоится и сможет «сыграть в свою игру»? Заранее они и сами не знают. Со стороны можно сказать, что психологически обе уязвимы примерно в равной степени. Динара говорит: « Самой слабой стороной Марата , я думаю, были его эмоции. То же самое было и у меня. Это хорошо, что мне удалось изменить это. Я знала, что это моя слабость, и я с ней боролась. Именно поэтому, я считаю, мне удался такой большой прыжок».

Зато, на стороне Кузнецовой некая лихость и раскрепощенность, с которой она выходила на корты «Ролан Гаррос». Самое неприятное, что у Светы после перевязок голеностопа появилась мозоль. Потому что, если ногу подворачиваешь, ее можно забинтовать, и тот же голеностоп не будет беспокоить. А мозоль все равно будет натирать во время движения. Динара также в четверг была не на 100% здорова. Будем надеяться, что день отдыха пойдет нашим грунтовым «принцессам» на пользу, и «королева» определится в полноценной и красивой борьбе.

Букмекеры пока отдают предпочтение Сафиной. Коэффициенты у британцев 1, 44 на Динару, и 2,62 на Светлану. Ещё больше шансов дают Сафиной в России – 1, 38 и 3,00 на Кузнецову.
А вот какие будут цифры на табло – пока не знает никто. Анастасии Мыскиной показалось, что в Светиных глазах есть уверенность и она готова выйти и показать все, на что она способна. Кузнецова, похоже, отошла от двух подряд тяжелых матчей и будет к финалу в порядке. Динара попила чаю с мёдом и чувствовала себя в пятницу гораздо лучше.

Итак, взятие россиянками Парижа назначено на субботу 6 июня, 17-00 мск.
